On several Hawaii cruises, guests can rise before dawn and be shuttled by van to the 10,000-foot
summit of Mount Haleakala. There they climb aboard mountain bikes and coast 38 miles downhill, zinging through 29 switchbacks
at speeds of up to 20 miles an hour. A guide, bikes, helmets, windbreakers, riding gloves and some meals are all included
in the eight-hour tour.
On Kauai, the line also offers a three-and-a-half hour Canopy Zip Line Adventure, in
which guests don harnesses and sail through the trees and over lush Hawaiian ravines along a series of seven zip lines suspended
high above the ground. A soak in a natural swimming hole awaits at the end. Both excursions are available on Pride of America,
which offers a seven-day round trip from Honolulu.
A hop to the seventh continent - Antarctica
- is the ultimate day trip. Guests on the "Fire and Ice" southern South America cruise from Ushuaia, Argentina,
to Valparaiso, Chile, can board a 44-seat charter flight at Punta Arenas, Chile, for a three-hour flight across the Strait
of Magellan and Drake Passage. The four-hour stay in Antarctica gives guests enough time at the bottom of the world to tour
a Chilean research station on King George Island and keep an eye out for three types of penguins, elephant seals on the beach
and whales in the harbor. (Warm jackets and boots are provided.)
